How to Ride a Unicycle

Sheetal Mandora
Regardless of age, learning how to ride a unicycle can be a rewarding experience for the entire family. With simple tips and tricks mentioned here, you can become a master in no time.
As the name suggests, unicycle is a human-powered, single-tire air-filled vehicle with pedals on either side. Even though a regular bicycle also has similar pedals, a unicycle has only one wheel with fewer mechanical complexities.
It's a fun activity for everyone in the family that requires a lot of physical strength. This is because you need to balance your entire body weight on one wheel. So if riding a unicycle intrigues you, don't be afraid and do give it a try.

Instructions for Beginners

Before you can ride the unicycle, you will have to purchase it. Look for online deals or information on sports stores that will either sell or rent one to you. Make sure you also purchase the necessary safety gear like helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads, etc., before you get on the unicycle.
Once you have all this sorted out, follow these guidelines for a smooth-sailing time.

1. Check if the tire has enough pressure, and adjust the height of the seat. While peddling, your knees are bent and not locked or straight when the pedal comes all the way down. A good habit is to inspect the settings every time you begin.
2. Find an open space where you can practice. Take the unicycle and stand near a wall or railing. Mount onto the unicycle and support yourself with the help of the wall or railing.
3. Now, you will have to balance yourself on one wheel with your upper body strength. This will help you from dismounting the unicycle. If you feel that you can't let go of the wall just yet, keep one leg on the ground and one on the pedal to find the perfect balance.
4. Keep holding the wall or railing and push yourself ahead with the foot that's on the ground. Once you're in motion, use both the feet for peddling. Stretch your arms out on either side, and balance yourself on the unicycle.
5. If you feel like you're about to fall off, stop peddling and bring one foot back on the ground for support. Take as much time as you want, and keep practicing until you don't require any additional support.

Instructions for Riding a Unicycle Backwards

After you have had ample amount of time to practice and can ride one without any fear or worries, it's time to take it a notch further. How does going backwards sound? To tell you the truth, there's not much difference in the technique; the only hurdle here is that you'll have to practice how it is done in reverse.
The motions of peddling the cycle will remain the same. The only difference is, you're going backwards and will require you to use all your senses not to hit an obstacle and fall off.
First things first, know that from steps 1-3 mentioned here, the process remains the same. The additional or varied step is that you will have to pedal in reverse to go backwards.
Well, that was quite simple to understand, right? Although it can be tricky at first, but it will get easier once you get the hang of it. Here too, you will have to use your upper body strength to support and balance the wheel to maneuver yourself backwards.
Even though, many people think that unicycles are easy to ride, it may take you some time to get the hang of it.
What you need to work on is how much power you need to give, the time and dedication to learn the art, and the commitment to see it all the way through.
Don't rush through the process and take as much as you can. Avoid performing any stunts just to impress others. Ride the unicycle carefully, be patient during the process, and stay safe.
